Addressing Real-Time Data Access Challenges

Real-time data access was a significant hurdle during Oldcastles migration from on-premises systems to Infor Cloud ERP on AWS. Their legacy systems had supported hundreds of complex reports that users relied on daily for operational decisions. In contrast, the cloud ERP's configuration-based reporting was limited in scope. To resolve this, Oldcastle implemented Amazon Aurora as the foundation for a scalable, high-performance database capable of processing millions of transactions. Auroras compatibility with MySQL enabled seamless integration with existing tools while maintaining high availability and low-latency query responses.

To further enhance data accessibility, Oldcastle leveraged Auroras replication capabilities. This ensured that business-critical reports could be generated in real-time without disrupting transactional workloads. By separating reporting from transactional processing, the company achieved a balance between operational efficiency and reporting agility.

Supporting Complex Reporting Needs

Oldcastles users required multidimensional analysis spanning customer service, finance, logistics, and manufacturing. Traditional ERP systems often struggle to meet such diverse needs due to limited reporting flexibility. To address this, Oldcastle utilized Amazon QuickSight, a serverless business intelligence tool, to build interactive dashboards that allowed users to analyze data from multiple perspectives.

The system was designed to support ad hoc queries and dynamic filtering, empowering users to drill down into specific metrics without requiring support from IT teams. This approach not only streamlined decision-making processes but also democratized data access across departments, fostering a data-driven culture within the organization.

Ensuring Seamless User Experiences

One of the key requirements was maintaining an integrated experience within the ERP system. Users needed to access reports without switching between platforms, which could disrupt workflows. Oldcastle achieved this by embedding QuickSight dashboards directly into the Infor ERP interface. This approach allowed users to access real-time analytics within their primary workspace, eliminating context-switching and reducing friction.

Additionally, the team implemented user authentication and access controls to ensure that sensitive data was only accessible to authorized personnel. This enhanced security while maintaining a streamlined user experience.

Enabling Advanced Analytics and Machine Learning

To extend analytics capabilities, Oldcastle integrated machine learning models for demand forecasting and intelligent search. By leveraging AWSs AI/ML services, the organization built predictive models that provided actionable insights into trends and patterns across their operations. These models were trained on data stored in Aurora, ensuring a consistent and reliable foundation.

The introduction of intelligent search allowed users to quickly locate specific data points without navigating through complex menu structures. This feature reduced the time spent on manual data retrieval and supported faster decision-making.

Scaling for Concurrent Users and High Transaction Volumes

Oldcastles solution needed to handle more than 100 concurrent users while processing millions of transactions. Amazon Auroras scalability played a critical role in meeting these demands. Its ability to automatically adjust resources based on workload ensured consistent performance even during peak usage periods.

To further enhance scalability, Oldcastle utilized Amazon Elastic Load Balancing (ELB) to distribute traffic efficiently across multiple instances. This architecture not only improved system reliability but also ensured that users experienced minimal latency, regardless of workload intensity.

Secure API Exposure for Data Accessibility

Exposing data securely through APIs was crucial for enabling both external and internal applications to interact with the ERP system. Oldcastle implemented AWS API Gateway to create, deploy, and manage APIs that connected with Aurora. This approach provided a secure and efficient mechanism for data access.

By combining API Gateway with AWS Identity and Access Management (IAM), Oldcastle enforced strict authentication and authorization protocols. This ensured that only approved applications and users could access sensitive data, safeguarding the organizations information assets.
