The Design of the Catalyst Platform

Santander developed the Catalyst platform in partnership with AWS Professional Services, leveraging the Platform Strategy Program (PSP). The platform's primary objective was to abstract infrastructure complexity and standardize architectural compliance. This ensured resources were provisioned consistently while reducing dependency on manual intervention.

The in-house frontend of Catalyst offers developers a centralized portal for provisioning and managing cloud resources. By simplifying operations, the portal reduces errors and accelerates workflows, directly addressing earlier delays in infrastructure setup. The ease of use and streamlined interaction between developers and infrastructure tools significantly reduce overhead costs.

Core Technologies Driving Efficiency

At the heart of the Catalyst platform lies the control plane cluster built on Amazon Elastic Kubernetes Service (Amazon EKS). This cluster orchestrates various components, ensuring coordinated workflows across the bank's cloud services. Crossplane, a universal resource provisioner, plays a pivotal role in managing resources declaratively and consistently across multiple cloud providers.

The inclusion of ArgoCD for data plane claims further enhances the platform's operational capacity. By automating application deployment and updates, Santander minimizes downtime and operational expenses. These technologies collectively foster cost-effective scalability and operational resilience.

Reducing Operational Costs and Delays

The implementation of Catalyst has significantly reduced infrastructure provisioning times from 90 days to a matter of hours. This improvement translates directly into lower labor costs and increased productivity. By standardizing workflows and automating repetitive tasks, Santander has alleviated the need for intensive operational efforts.

Additionally, the platform's compliance mechanisms ensure that all provisioned services meet established architectural standards, reducing risks associated with misconfigured resources.
